The Fable of the Industry Standard

Hello everyone! Welcome to another edition of The Magic Hole. This week, we’re taking a look at a Temur ramp brew that I’ve been tooling around with. No, you’re not having deja vu, it is in fact another Temur deck. And much like last week's deck we are copying some of the most powerful creatures in the format. But I’m getting a little ahead of myself. https://youtu.be/khLyab7lgDI Previous Next For starters, we are a traditional ramp deck. Playing cards like Path to the Festival, Field Trip, and Quandrix Cultivator to get us to our payoffs. This comes with a few challenges. Our main concern is drawing all of our payoffs and no ramp, or all of our ramp and no payoffs. This can lead to some pretty brutal losses as we do basically nothing as our opponent runs rampant with whatever their game plan is. To resolve this issue, we play the ever powerful, omnipresent, Fable of the Mirror Breaker. This will help us ramp slightly more with the first mode, filter through the not-so-useful cards in our hand in the second mode, and then copy our huge creatures in the third mode. If this card didn’t exist, this would be a Simic deck no questions asked. But it does exist, so we have to force it in the deck like it's the last pair of underwear you swear you need into a way too full suitcase. So because we’re also in red, we get access to some removal in Voltage Surge and Shatterskull Smashing to keep us alive long enough to get to our payoffs. We also get a decent board wipe in Burn Down the House. Previous Next Previous Next One of my favorite cards in the deck (which we unfortunately didn’t get to see much of) is Shigeki, Jukai Visionary. In the early game Shigeki is a kind of unorthodox ramp card that fuels the late game by filling the graveyard. Once we get enough mana, Shigeki can basically get back most of the haymakers that may have been placed in our graveyard from earlier in the game. Discard a Titan of Industry to the Fable? No problem, just use Shigeki’s X ability to get it back to your hand. As long as the card isn’t legendary, you can get it back. Speaking of Titan of Industry, we usually will win the game by playing one of our seven drops. We have three each of Titan of Industry and Hullbreaker Horror, and one of Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant. All of these are pretty scary threats, but I’m pretty convinced after playing this deck quite a bit that Jin-Gitaxias can be taken out for something else. A fourth of either Titan or Hullbreaker would make the most sense, but to me this is more of a ‘fun-of’ spot, so play whatever you want! Previous Next Overall the deck has a few familiar themes, ramp is a staple archetype in pretty much any format, and there are common struggles to overcome with it. You’ll see in the video that even with the help of Fable it can be difficult to find your way out of situations where you can only draw ramp and lands.
Rootcoil Creeper
I think there is a place for this deck, and definitely some tweaks to be made here. I would probably start with cutting Field Trip altogether. It only searches for forests and I don’t think having access to the Lessons is really all that good. Finding a replacement for Path to the Festival is fine too, I liked it because it would allow us to scry if we had three basic land types. I also think Rootcoil Creeper is pretty medium. Maybe adding in some more removal for the early game would work a bit better, or adding another Shigeki. Anyway, there are quite a few ways you could go with this deck. I love playing ramp decks, or just cheating out huge creatures. So any chance I get to slam a Titan of Industry and potentially copy it, you know I’m gonna take it. Thank you everyone for hanging out in The Magic Hole. Make sure to check out the gameplay footage on YouTube and follow me on Instagram and TikTok. See you all next week!
