Hello everyone! Welcome to another edition of The Magic Hole! This week we’re back in the explorer format to check in on an old friend of mine, Transmogrify. This is easily one of my favorite Magic cards. I love cheating stuff into play. We’ve played with this card before on the channel, that time we were cheating Agent of Treachery into play. This time we are doing something slightly different.
We still have all of the usual suspects to enable our combo. Fable of the Mirror-Breaker and Courier’s Briefcase. But when we drop blue from the deck we have some room to now include Ranger Class which offers some utility with its last mode, and Careful Cultivation which both ramps and gives us a creature to target with our Transmogrify.
You might be asking yourself, if we’re not cheating out Agents, what are we cheating out? Or maybe the title of the article gave you a hint. Either way, we will be wind-mill slamming Titan of Industry from the top of our decks this go around. Titan is a solid choice for a few reasons, it's incredibly versatile. It can gain us some life, destroy and random artifact or enchantment, protect itself from some removal, but most importantly, in my opinion, it can create a 4/4 token that can also be a target for Transmogrify if we need it to! It's really a great option if you aren’t a fan of the Agent of Treachery plan.
Other than those changes, we’ve added some removal to the list to help us survive long enough if our combo pieces stall out. We get a really slept on removal spell for this list, Fire Prophecy, allowing us to put a Titan in our hand into our library where it belongs. We also have a couple of Abrades and Play with Fire.
We also added two copies of Chandra, Torch of Defiance and one Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast. Chandra is both able to ramp us, remove threats, and let us dig deeper into our deck to find our combo pieces. I think Chandra is a solid inclusion here. The one-of Lukka is a little more sketchy. He is basically just an extra Transmogrifier if we need it. His other abilities don’t really do much for our gameplan.
In the gameplay we had some pretty frustrating games. Drawing eight to ten lands and only five or six spells isn’t really something you can come back from in a blue white control matchup. We also faced off against another combo deck that just so happened to make an infinitely big Devilish Valet on turn three. Obviously we can’t compete with that.
Overall though, the deck is super fun to play, maybe not the most consistent, and you could make the argument that the Agent of Treachery version is better. But there is some value in the flexibility that the Titan brings. Either way, we’re not done experimenting with Transmogrify, we will be back with another iteration of this deck, and I hope you’re as excited as I am!
